They will explain that in each one of them there will be three different roles - one for each person - and will assign those in the way they think it’s best. The first role will be the expositor, the second one the listener and the third one that of the observer. The expositor will have to tell the listener a personal story that can be either problematic or positive. The listener will have to listen to the tale and interrupt with questions, gestures, attitudes etc. when needed.
The third person, to which the trainer will give the sheet “Watch out for the listening”, will have to observe the conversation and take notes on the listener’s behaviour according to the sheet. The exposition and the listening activities can take no more than 10 minutes.

● Phase 2 – feedback
At the end of the first phase the observer will proceed to give feedback to the listener. Thanks to the completed sheet, the observer will provide a series of comments attesting the more or less suitable way in which the listener followed the expositor’s story. This latter can also intervene by expressing their own point of view.

3. Reflecting (20 minutes): The trainer will have each group express itself on the results of the experience and there will be a discussion in plenary about the identified common points, trying to find out what aspects have a positive influence on the listening activity. Being able to actively listen with attention and respect is a way to show empathy to the interlocutor. On the other hand, passive listening can be counterproductive for relationships.

Active listening refers to the process by which a listener fully concentrates, understands, responds, and remembers what is being said. It goes beyond passive hearing, demanding engagement from the listener, both cognitively and emotionally. The essential components of active listening include:

- Attention: Focusing entirely on the speaker, without distractions or preconceptions.
- Reflection: Paraphrasing or summarising what the speaker has said to ensure understanding.
- Clarification: Asking questions to clear up any confusion or to gain deeper insight into the message.
- Empathy: Demonstrating understanding of the speaker's emotions, perspectives, or concerns.
- Non-verbal cues: Using body language, facial expressions, and eye contact to show engagement.
- Feedback: Giving verbal or non-verbal signals that you are listening, such as nodding or making brief acknowledgements like “I see” or “That’s interesting.”

Active listening is crucial for overcoming linguistic and cultural barriers, aligning diverse interests, and finding common ground in complex negotiations.

In a world that consists of countries with diverse histories, cultures, and languages, cross-cultural communication is central to effective dialogue. Active listening becomes even more critical in this context because:

Cultural Sensitivity: Different cultures may have different communication styles. For instance, some cultures might prioritise indirect communication, while others may be more direct. Active listening requires sensitivity to these differences and an ability to adapt one's listening style accordingly.

Avoiding Misunderstandings: Cross-cultural misunderstandings can arise when assumptions about intent or meaning are made. Active listening helps to clarify potential misinterpretations early on in conversations and negotiations, ensuring that there is less chance of confusion or conflict.

Building Mutual Respect: Through active listening, individuals and representatives from different cultural backgrounds can feel respected, leading to stronger relationships and more fruitful collaborations. In the EU, this is essential not just for intra-EU relations but also in external relations with neighbouring countries and international partners.
