Topic 4: Creativity – Mind Maps
The objective and aim of the Mind Mapping process is to help learners strengthen and develop their skills, develop self-awareness, connect ideas, grow creativity and areas for improvement, to identify areas in which to further develop, see patterns and gaps and branch out with their training needs, develop improvements, explore new concepts, review and refine. Mind maps can be used to problem solve, plan, and organize self-development.

Module 3: Dealing with Change

    Presentation: Next in small groups or as an individual assign a specific topic or concept, create a mind map related to that topic.

    • During this session, you are encouraged to develop your own Mind Maps, this should be a simple subject, best related to something they are aware of, a general topic Health and Physical Education, Climate and the Environment, Culture, Social Sciences or General Education. Use examples in following slides.
    • Examine a well structured Mind Map that demonstrates the effective use of keywords, sub-branches, visual images and colours, at this stage develop a regular Mind Map exercise related to a class content or even a personal interest.
    • You should now create a basic Mind Map and present to your tutor, or a colleague and be prepared for critical feedback, this should be encouraged. This allows the others to feed their ideas which promotes collaboration and further creativity and awareness.

    Strategies: Embrace mind mapping, this may involve developing a creative and engaging supportive learning environment, start with a list of interesting topics, you should add to a specific topic for the Mind Map creation.

    • What 3 learning goals you would like to achieve through the exercise, decide on the most important goal
    • Develop a simple Mind Map, demonstrating how the central theme connects to sub-branches, explore the concept visually, try to be engaging and memorable, encourage creativity
    • Use the Mind Map as a story board, a branch or sub-branch represents a new plot, or scene, again use colours and images. A simple Mind Map could be planning a travel, central topic; a trip to Japan, add branches, sub-branches; mode of transport, cities to visit, landmarks, food, culture, experiences gained, etc.
    • Other simple Mind Maps may include; Art, Problem Solving, My Future, Learning a Language. Branches: vocabulary, grammar rules, cultural insights make use of images, audio clips or pronunciation guides to enhance the learning.
