Activating (25 minutes):

● Vaihe 1
The trainer will ask three people to volunteer: once identified those people, they will ask two of them to go out of the room for a while. These three people will have the role of Listeners. The rest of the participants will have the role of Observers. The trainer will then ask one participant in the room to volunteer for the role of Communicator. This person will be handed a sheet called “Tale” (attached) and asked to read it carefully, aloud, so that the Observers and Listener n.1, still in the room, can hear the story on the sheet. The Observers will have to pay attention to everything that will happen during the exercise, without intervening. If they want, they can take notes.

Listener n.1 will narrate without reading the content of the tale to Listener n.2. This latter will listen carefully, without asking questions. Once it’s over, Listener n.3 will get back to class. Listener 2 will communicate to Listener 3 what they heard from Listener 1. Lastly, Listener 3 will report to the class the content heard from Listener 2.

3. Pohdinta (20 minuuttia): This third part will focus on the rest of the class that played the role of Observer. The trainer will ask them to freely express or identify some specifics that they noted in the dynamic of the previous exchange of information. They can start by asking this question to the Observers:
● Did the tale read and then reported by the Communicator arrive identical up to Listener n.3?

For sure the answer will be no and the Observers will need to explain briefly what they think happened during the exchange of information. The goal would be to create a discussion that leads people to think about how often the news we receive gets modified during the exchange “by word of mouth”.

This does not necessarily happen because of the malice of people, but it’s the result of the characteristics of each one of us. Every person tends in fact to hold some type of information more than others and to form their own personal opinions on what they hear. Moreover, our brain is naturally wired to save energy and thus to simplify the information we get. It can also happen that news can be misheard because of hearing impairments, misunderstandings or noise in the environment at the moment of the exchange of information.

This teaches us two important things about communication:

It’s important to listen carefully and to communicate efficiently, choosing the correct words, possibly in a synthetic way, making sure that the speakers fully understands the content we share and repeating it if not.

When we receive information it’s better to use our critical sense, without taking it for sure, but asking ourselves what the sources are, what passages it already went through before coming to us. We should try to clarify the content as much as possible by getting informed, asking questions and looking further into it, especially when the content we heard does not seem clear enough. Only when we feel sure enough we can share that information, always paying attention to communicating it in a suitable way.

In educational contexts, critical thinking is often seen as an essential skill that should be cultivated in students. This can be done through:

Problem-based learning: Students are presented with real-world problems and encouraged to think critically about potential solutions.

Socratic questioning: Teachers can model Socratic questioning to guide students through deep inquiry and reflection.

Argumentation and debate: Allowing students to engage in debates helps them develop their skills in constructing, defending, and critiquing arguments.

Challenges and Limitations. While critical thinking is highly valued, it is not without its challenges:

Cognitive load: The mental effort required to think critically can be taxing, especially in complex or unfamiliar situations.

Cultural and emotional factors: Critical thinking may be influenced by cultural norms, emotions, and social pressures, which can limit one’s ability to think objectively.

Lack of training: Without proper instruction or practice, individuals may struggle to develop their critical thinking skills fully.

Critical thinking is a dynamic, multifaceted competence that encompasses the ability to engage in reasoned, reflective, and systematic thinking.
